What Makes a Great Explainer Video?

We’ve seen a lot of explainer videos over the years, and made quite a few ourselves. The best ones tend to have a few things in common.


Clear structure. A focused message. Clean design. Animation that feels purposeful, not overwhelming.


That’s the baseline. But what makes them great?



A Script That Actually Works

The script is the foundation. It’s not just about what’s said, it’s about how it flows, where it pauses, and how it builds understanding.

A great script feels effortless, but that ease comes from careful thought. The good ones guide the viewer through a journey: setup, build, payoff. They make room for feeling, not just facts.

Visuals That Serve the Story

Good design matters,

but great design supports the message.

That doesn’t always mean high detail or bold colour. Sometimes it’s about restraint. Choosing a palette that keeps the focus. Creating compositions that direct the eye. Using texture, shape, and space to guide attention without distraction.


Animation With Intent

We don’t need every moment to move. Clever transitions, thoughtful pacing, and moments of stillness are often more powerful than constant motion.

The goal isn’t to impress for the sake of it. It’s to hold attention, carry meaning, and make the story stick.

Yes, Clients Still Want to Be Wowed

And they should. But the “wow” doesn’t need to be loud. Sometimes it’s a smooth transition that makes sense of something complex. A shift in perspective that lands just right. A sequence that balances clarity with emotion.
